A poem a day keeps the tedium away

April is poetry month. To celebrate I will post one children's poem a day for 30 days straight. Each poem will let you know just what book you can find it in. By the end of the month, I will have given you a list of 30, count 'em 30, books of children's poetry. No foolin'.

Raining Cats
It's raining cats,
A cataract,
A waterfall,
With felines stacked.
One, two, and three--
Catastrophe,
They're purring down
On top of me.

--Jane Yolen

from Raining Cats and Dogs, written by Jane Yolen; illustrated by Jane Street. Harcourt, 1993.

(Note: when quoting poems online, always include a full citation for the collection from which the poem originated. If the poem is not in the public domain (i.e. is still in copyright) abide by the principle of Fair Dealing in your use of the work.)

  1. Awesome, what a treat. I love the fact that Rosebud's teacher incorporates poetry all year in her grade 1 class.

  2. Love it. She's the author of the dinosaur books, isn't she? (How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight? etc.)

  3. Yep. That's her. She's written those and, oh, a couple of hundred other books for children. Prolific would be an understatement. She's a giant in the field.

  4. 300 to be more or less exact. (And can you fix the line breaks. And tell people that they shouldn't re-quote poems online without permission unless it's done this way, with a picture of the book cover and date, publisher etc. Thanks.)

  5. Hi Jane:
Fixed. Sorry, but I don't know quite what happened with the line breaks. They were perfect earlier in the day on my work computer where I previewed the post. I've corrected them now.

  6. Note - when giving an author free publicity to a crowd that actually likes books and authors and buying books, which can only help the authors, it's nice when the authors don't act like asses.

  8. I have to say, I'm kind of with LadyHash and Anonymous commenter #2. (And I am a huge fan of Ms Yolen. Don't want that to change.)

  11. I love your idea of a poem a day for April.

I also think you have consistently done a valuable job of properly promoting good works. I just wanted you to know that some of us really appreciate all that you do here. I know I do!
